Origin of the word: ‘Paladin’ At the Court of Charlemagne in Aix-la-Chapelle, the name ‘Paladin’ was given to the 12 knights of the imperial guard. These knights, whose history goes much further back than those of Arthurian legends, were regarded as paragons of chivalry, heroic champions and defenders of noble causes. They endured for centuries and even today Roland, the best-known and most renowned of this chivalrous order, is regarded as one of the most famous figures in French History. Thus, the word Paladin became synonymous with knight-errants who, while waiting for a profitable heritage or marriage, lived a life of wandering with companions, in search of adventure, tournaments and wealth. |
